A WIDE WINGSPAN
"Ithaca may not rival New York City, Chicago, or New Orleans as a hotbed for jazz music, but it seems that nobody mentioned that to the three players in Wingnut. Whereas the jazz influence has become a homogenizing cliche for many "jam" bands, Wingnut's approach to their music marks them as purveyors of the style. Obviously well schooled in the fusion of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and the organ-trio sound of Jimmy Smith, Wingnut flaunts innovative musical chops and irresistible soul. Comparisons to Medeski Martin and Wood are inevitable, if only because a sound so full and distinct is coming from just three musicians. The trio is consistently experimental without losing focus on mature arrangement. Elements of hip-hop, blues, trance, and funk are unmistakable, but all are translated into Wingnut's language...Do not make the mistake of missing this trio live, where they shine. Stark's hands are a blur as his fingers race between the ivories of his grand piano and Hammond B3 organ. He is equally adept on each of these instruments, crafting alluring melodies at one instant and thick, spiraling swells the next. Marshburn's treatment of his sparse jazz kit is comparable to few others. Lorenzut makes the floor vibrate with his deep bass lines, and can move down the neck for an unexpected solo at any moment. Contrasting moods, dynamic intensity, and remarkable improvisation are all contained in the Wingnut grab bag."
- Ben Kupstas, Cornell Daily Sun

"... with authentic jazz sounds, Wingnut retains a traditional core while exploring fresh avenues. Each member of the trio demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the genre... these guys certainly know how to turn it loose."
- Jim Santella, www.allaboutjazz.com

"...allows Stark to work with everything in his pencilbox: expressive organ, gorgeous piano and commanding stereo synthesizer" - J.J. Blair, Williamsport Gazette

"high energy, harder edged stuff... over a wicked deep groove... Stark adds thick Hammond swashes that would satisfy any Deep Purple fan." - Erie Times

"Heavy in the authenticity department, Wingnut defines its own sound through original composition...The result here is a very patient yet ferocious sound in which you can hear the players communicate intensely."
- William J. Turfcott, JamBase.com

"Tracks like 'Rerun' imply Richard "Groove" Holmes one minute, and then turn full circle to evoke the haunting compositions of Philip Glass. If Tim Burton had enlisted a band to make Gotham City hip, Wingnut would have been his best bet."
- Jeff Miller, The Ithacan
